Vobster Quay Freediving
Vobster Quay is located in Somerset not far from Frome and is a great location to learn and improve your freediving. Each month from April – September you will find us at Vobster either teaching, running guided freediving trips or 121 coaching. If you are interested in any of these sessions or have any questions then do get in contact.
Vobster Quay has changing rooms and showering facilities as well as a food van and parking just a few meters from the quarry.
If you are interested in what you might see then check out our videos below from locations around the map.
Flag 1 – Industrial Dryer
Flag 1 on the map is a buoy that leads down to the industrial dryer at around 12m. The dryer provides a nice swim through and when the vis is good you can see the concrete tubes marked by flag 5. The dryer is located just on the edge before it drops down to 24m.
Flag 2 – Small Boat Wreck
Flag 2 on the map is a buoy that leads down to the bow of a small boat at about 7m. Once you reach the boat you can pull yourself along the scaffolding poles that gently fall down to 9m towards platform 1 and then come up the buoy line.
Flag 5 – Concrete Pipes
The concrete pipes are located at around 12m if the visibility is good then you will see the third pipe behind the two that are side by side, but when the visibility is poor you won’t see the third concrete block.
Buoy 1-2 – Training Platforms
Buoys 1-2 mark two scuba training platforms, between the platforms you will find a small boat (Flag 2). The platforms are at about 7-9m
Buoy 2-1 – Training Platforms
This time swimming the other direction and a different perspective. The scaffolding on the platforms allow you to pull along most of the journey between the two buoys.
Buoy 6 – Jacquin II Wreck
Jacquin II sits between 16m-20m deep. At 15m long with a buoy marking each end. The wooden cabin cruiser has a wheel house that is accessible to freedivers. You can drop down the buoy at either end of the boat and swim over the top as well. Click here for a 3D Render of the boat.
Buoy 12 – Crushing Works (Video 1)
The crushing works is an industrial brick and steel structure that start at 14m where steal girders meet the lines of the two buoys, then continues down to 22m where there is a small swim through at the bottom. Click here for a 3D Render of the site.
Buoy 12 – Crushing Works (Video 2)
A second video of the crushing works this time filming someone swimming through the 22m swim through at the bottom. Just mind your head and don’t loose a fin. It’s a dark dive even with good visibility. Click here for a 3D Render of the site.
Buoy 12 – Crushing Works (Video 3)
In this video you can see a freediver enter freefall gliding down into the crushing works. Click here for a 3D Render of the site.
Buoy 16,11,17 Plane (Front, Mid, Rear)
The plane, a Hawker Siddeley HS-748 is located around 12m deep. Split into three parts, in this video you can see a swim through of the three parts of the plane. There was a lot of algae coverage so the visibility was limited.
Buoy 17- Plane (Rear)
The plane, a Hawker Siddeley HS-748 is located around 12m deep. Split into three parts, in this video you can see the top of the plane which you can swim through from an entrance on the left side. Click here for a 3D Render of the plane.
Buoy 28 – Sea King Helicopter
The Sea King helicopter is located at around 24m deep, once the algae blooms start then visibility reduces around the helicopter making for a dark dive. So we will try to update the video when there is more light and better visibility. Click here for a 3D Render of the Sea King.
